9-Ball Rules Explained
Nine-ball is the rotation game you see in professional tournaments. Only nine balls go on the table, position play matters more than it does in eight-ball, and a single shot can end the game, because whoever legally pockets the 9 wins no matter how few balls they made. If you already know eight-ball, nine-ball will feel quicker and a lot more tactical, and the swings are bigger.
The rotation rule
Rotation is the rule the whole game hangs on: on every shot, the cue ball has to contact the lowest-numbered ball on the table first. You do not have to pocket that ball. You do not have to pocket balls in order, either. Hit the lowest one first and any ball that drops counts, and you stay at the table. Combinations, caroms, and banks are all legal ways to sink the 9 early.
Since the 9 wins the game, a player can send the lowest ball into the 9 for an instant win. That is what makes nine-ball so volatile.
The break and the push out
The rack is a diamond, the 1 ball on the foot spot and the 9 in the center. A legal break means the breaker hits the 1 first and either pockets a ball or drives at least four balls to the rails. Pocket the 9 on a legal break and that usually wins the game outright, depending on the rule set.
Right after a legal break, the player at the table can choose to push out. On a push out they may hit the cue ball anywhere, with no requirement to contact the lowest ball or drive anything to a rail, and it is not a foul. The point is to move the cue ball somewhere better when the break leaves an awkward layout. The opponent then decides whether to shoot from the new position or pass it back.
Fouls in nine-ball
Fouls follow familiar pool logic, and the penalty is ball in hand anywhere on the table, which is a serious gift in a rotation game. The main fouls are:
- Failing to hit the lowest-numbered ball first.
- Not pocketing a ball and not driving any ball to a rail after contact.
- Scratching the cue ball into a pocket or off the table.
- Touching or moving balls illegally.
After a foul the incoming player puts the cue ball wherever they like, which in nine-ball often sets up an easy run, since the balls tend to be spread out.
How you win
You win by legally pocketing the 9 ball. Because you keep shooting as long as you pocket a ball on a legal hit, a strong player can run the whole rack from the 1 to the 9. But the 9 can fall much earlier on a legal combination, say hitting the 1 so it drives the 9 into a pocket. Both count as wins. That mix of steady runs and sudden combination finishes is what gives nine-ball its pace and its drama.
