Q: Are MDF pool tables any good?

For occasional casual play on a budget they are fine, but slate stays flat far longer.

A pool table is a big purchase and a big object. Get the room measurements and the bed material right and you'll enjoy it for decades. Get them wrong and it's an expensive regret.

Step 1: Measure your room

You need space for the table plus a full cue swing on every side. Using a standard 58" cue:

Tight on space? A shorter 52" or 48" cue shrinks the clearance needed. Measure before you fall in love with a 9-footer.

Step 2: Slate, not MDF

The single most important spec is the bed. Slate stays dead flat for the life of the table. MDF/"wood bed" tables are cheaper and lighter but tend to warp and roll off within a few years. If you plan to keep it, buy slate.

Step 3: The rest of the checklist

Cushions — gum rubber (K-66 profile) gives a lively, consistent rebound.
Cloth — worsted (speed) cloth plays faster and lasts longer than napped felt.
Frame — solid hardwood legs and beams; avoid flexy particleboard bases.
Installation — slate tables should be assembled and leveled by a pro. Budget for it.

A 7ft (bar-size) slate table fits far more rooms than an 8ft and still plays true. Slate is the key word — it stays flat where MDF beds sag over time.
